Recent Release => Disgust Diet Pack – Harnessing the power of disgust: a randomized trial to reduce high-calorie food appeal through implicit priming
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Volume 102, Issue 2, 1 August 2015, Pages 249–255, https://doi.org/10.3945/ajcn.115.106955
Here’s how it works. The app fills a users phone screen with a picture of delicious food combined with something gross, like an insect, for less than a second as soon as the phone is touched. The app continues flashing a different disgusting/delicious picture on each wake up. With regular exposure, the unconscious motivation to indulge will erode away.
In labs, using pictures to induce change is called priming. For 30 years, researchers from around the world have used priming to impact attitudes, biases, and behaviors.
According to Tony Greenwald, social psychologist and author of Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People, the lasting effects of priming are still unclear. In research labs though, priming is proven to have a positive impact on all sorts of things, from amnesia to prejudices.
In June of 2015, a peer reviewed research study was published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showing that participants who were exposed to this priming technique were able to curb their hunger for junk foods.
Now, Happego is looking for willing participants to take part in a similar trial to see if the app can help promote healthy choices for users.
